Sun Bowl Stadium

Sports X along with the University of Texas at El Paso and Ticketmaster are proud to announce the “Battle of El Dorado” , a one of a kind HBCU (Historically Black Collegees and Universities) marching band competition, which will take place at the UTEP Sun Bowl May 2nd 2015. In just under 60 days, the El Paso area will witness unsurpassed showmanship and talent. The main focus of this event is to offer college scholarships in all aspects of marching band to El Paso area students.

Making the trip to ElPaso on March 10th for the official signing were Band Directors,Drum Majors/ Students, and Adminstrators. From Alcorn State University Lorman, Mississippi “Sounds of Dynamite”(Assistant Band Director Everson Martin and Student Band Director Chesteron Frye). Representing Mississippi Valley State University from Itta Bena,Mississippi,”Mean Green Marching Machine” (Dr.Jacqueline Gibson Vice President of Student Affairs and Head Drum Major Ameer Baker). From Prairie View A&M University , Prairie View, Texas “Marching Storm Band” ( Head Band Director Dr. Timmey Zachery and Head Drum Major Jordon Blacksher)
.
Three years of planning have been invested into bringing an event to the El Paso area that not only offers entertainment, but a much needed educational aspect. Diversity is the mission statement of each university traveling to the area. As music knows no boundaries, our area youth will be afforded not only the opportunity to attend this event, but also have a chance to obtain “Full” college marching band scholarships . El Paso area high school marching bands are some of the best in the state of Texas. This opportunity has been too long in coming.

The venues participated in by our visiting HBCU’s range from Mardi Gras Parades to Super Bowls and Dallas Cowboy halftime shows along with numerous other events that demand the presence of proven showmanship that evokes a crowd festive atmosphere second to none. Wowing giant crowds has become second nature and is expected and delivered by Alcorn, Prairie View and Mississippi Valley State. The Battle of El Dorado will be no different. Just ask our visitors.

It seemed unfair that only a small portion of students who placed such a huge amount of effort in to what is marching band had limited outlets to use their talents to gain a college education. Our visitors will be meeting with area heads of marching bands for all the El Paso area school districts to discuss the critera needed to submit audition material to each university. The submissions will be evaluated and full college scholarships may be awarded. Announcements of area students awarded these scholarships will be at the Sun Bowl on May 2nd.

Borrowing from Edgar Allen Poe’s poem “El Dorado” , Sports X has incorporated its own adaptation of the popular poem into all aspects of this event. The poem depicts a knight in search of great wealth in the fictional city of El Dorado. His journey spans a great length of time and whether from exhaustion or frustration he meets a shadow who tells him he must ride harder if he seeks riches. The Conquistador/ Knight is represented by the three university bands seeking the gold. El Dorado is our great city of El Paso. The gold being sought,
our area senior marching band students. This first time event created the need for a magnificent trophy. Creation and construction of the award being presented to the winning band is the job of world famous NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) race car building legend Don Davis, an El Paso resident and former Gadsen educator .

Mr. Davis was the recipient of the first place jury prize for a sculpture he created some fifty years ago in Professor Wilts Harrison’s class at Texas Western College in El Paso, Texas. This unique metal sculpture was entirely constructed from individual metal welding rods in a process that could only have been done by Mr. Davis. The extraordinary sculpture is under lease to Sports X and pictures will be released to the press upon request.
Commissioning the one-of-a kind trophy being awarded to the winning band could only be intrusted to an individual with the talents, forthought, and aptitude of both an artist and a sculptor. For months Don has amazed our staff with his insight and total commitment to the first award that will truly encompass the dedication of all marching band participants.

Joe Parades of The Art and Framing Gallery created a special “ Blank “ of the sun which local artist Francisco Romero was commissioned to hand to create an original work of art for each visiting University that will stand as a reminder of their visit to El Paso,Texas. Local artist Johnny Rivers lll rendition of the ElPaso city lights and local world famous eatery will also be presented.

The support offered by Congressman Beto O’Rourke and his staff has been wonderful!
Represenatives of YISD,SISD,EPISD,CISD,and others have lived up to their Mission Statements of placing the growth of their students first. Sports X invitation to a monthly meeting in late 2014 was met with exactly the type of enthusiam that will allow us to set a Guiness World Record for Marching Band Scholarships awarded at a sinle event.

Mr. Bob Wingo of Sanders /Wingo Advertising (9th Floor Wells Fargo Bank Building) was the fisrt Corporate Sponsor for our event. Hosting a reception in their conference room allowed for our University guest to not only see but visit with a principal of the El Paso community with deep roots in both Diversity and Education.

Sports X staff met first with District Director Cynthia Cano, a former educator, immediately recognized the educational potential of the event. To have such forward thinking leaders in our community allows Sports X to not sell, but showcase our city to the over 600 marching band members who will arrive in El Paso April 31st 2015. Our visit there sealed the committiment to what we know will be an annual event that not only brings positive attention to our city government leadership but to El Paso as well. There “is” Gold in these mountains. It is represented by the warmth of our city, its people, and it’s students.

Working hand in hand with the visiting universities admissions departments, our school districts represenatives will upon the students return from springbreak be able assist with audition submissions. To witness the extreme effort has been wonderful !

The official signing was hosted compliments of Edward and Evon Davis of Nuovo Cappetto 2711N. Stanton 79902 at 6:30 pm Tuesday..Before that our visitors were presented with a tour of our city, the UTEP Sun Bowl, a tour of the Art and Framing Gallery, a wonderful catered lunch at the Sports X offices by Esa and Chad Savage of Savagely Delicious Catering which produced smiles that indicated a love for our area food.
